DEG Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day at Liebesbier

The sound of Irish folk music, the clink of glasses and bursts of laughter filled Liebesbier’s Brennerei on Saturday evening as the DEG hosted its annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The Brennerei specially transformed into a pub for the occasion was packed to bursting, and the lively atmosphere quickly set the tone for an evening full of music, conversation and Irish cheer.

Members, guests and curious newcomers gathered to enjoy a celebration that brought a touch of Irish pub culture to Bayreuth. The evening opened with a warm welcome from Sabine Greiner, head of the board of the DEG, who greeted the many attendees and introduced the work of the society.

Since its founding in 1994, the Deutsch-Englische Gesellschaft Bayreuth has aimed to foster cultural exchange between Bayreuth and the English-speaking world. Through social evenings, book discussions, conversation meet-ups and cultural events, the society offers opportunities for people of different backgrounds to come together, share ideas and experience anglophone cultures in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Greiner emphasised that the DEG is less about formal structures and more about creating a welcoming space where people can meet, talk and enjoy good company. St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated around the world as a joyful tribute to Irish culture, provided the perfect occasion for such a gathering.

A special word of thanks was extended to the team at Liebesbier and Maisel & Friends, whose generous support made the evening possible. By offering their venue at short notice, they helped the organisers out of a difficult situation and provided an ideal setting for the celebration.

The organisers also expressed their gratitude to Dart Club Kreuz SC, whose members invited guests to try their hand at a round of darts during the evening – an activity that proved very popular and contributed to the relaxed pub atmosphere.

The musical highlight of the evening came from the Irish folk band Shamrocks 4 You, who entertained the audience with several energetic sets throughout the night. Their repertoire ranged from traditional Irish tunes to well-known pub favourites, and it did not take long before the audience was clapping along enthusiastically and filling the room with the unmistakable spirit of an Irish pub evening.

Between the band’s performances, guests could test their general knowledge on Ireland in a short pub quiz focusing on the country’s geography, culture and traditions. Later in the evening, a tombola provided another moment of excitement, with several lucky participants taking home small prizes.

Beyond the music and entertainment, the evening offered what the DEG values most: conversation and community. Over good beer and lively discussions, guests enjoyed the warm and informal atmosphere that has long characterised the society’s events.

The celebration began with a traditional Irish toast – “May your troubles be less, and your blessings be more” – and the sentiment seemed to accompany the gathering throughout the night. By the time the final songs were played, it was clear that the DEG had once again succeeded in bringing a little Irish spirit to Bayreuth.

Sláinte!
