250 Years of America: DEG Conversation Evening Sparks Lively Debate and Reflection
Deutsch-Englische Gesellschaft Bayreuth e.V. – Conversation Evening Report
The latest Conversation Evening of the Deutsch-Englische Gesellschaft Bayreuth e.V. brought together eight participants for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on the theme “250 Years USA.” Marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026, the evening explored not only American history, but also the ideals, contradictions, and challenges that continue to shape the country today.

From the very beginning, the conversation was lively and wide-ranging. Participants reflected on the origins of the United States and the influence of Enlightenment ideals such as liberty, democracy, and individual rights. The American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence served as starting points for a broader discussion about whether the United States has truly lived up to its founding principles.
Historical topics such as the Civil War, slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Cold War generated especially animated exchanges. Participants discussed how historical conflicts and unresolved tensions continue to influence American society and politics today. Comparisons were also made between current global crises and earlier periods of political uncertainty and confrontation, including the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The discussion then turned toward contemporary America, including questions about political polarization, social media, immigration, and the role of the United States on the global stage. The influence of Donald Trump and the increasing division within American politics led to particularly lively debate. Participants exchanged differing perspectives on populism, democracy, and the challenges facing modern democratic societies in general.
One recurring theme throughout the evening was the tension between knowledge and action: how societies often recognize risks and historical lessons, yet still struggle to act upon them. This led to thoughtful reflections on whether history truly repeats itself—or whether humanity repeatedly falls into similar patterns despite greater awareness.
As always, the atmosphere was open, respectful, and intellectually curious. The combination of historical reflection and contemporary relevance made for a particularly successful and engaging Conversation Evening.
The DEG now looks forward to the next Conversation Evening on 14 July, when members and guests will once again gather to discuss a new topic in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We hope for another lively turnout and an equally stimulating exchange of ideas and perspectives.
