Book Club Discusses Bryson’s “Road to Little Dribbling”

On 24 February, six members of the DEG Book Club met to discuss Bill Bryson’s travel memoir The Road to Little Dribbling. The evening produced a lively exchange of opinions, as the group reacted quite differently to Bryson’s humorous journey across Britain.

Several participants greatly enjoyed the book and described it as an entertaining and affectionate portrait of the country. They appreciated Bryson’s sharp observations, dry wit and ability to notice the peculiarities of everyday British life. Some readers felt that the book would make excellent preparation for a holiday in the United Kingdom, as it introduced a wide range of landscapes, towns and cultural habits while also conveying a strong sense of British character and humour.

Others, however, found the book less engaging. Some members felt that the episodic structure occasionally became repetitive and that Bryson’s extended descriptions of places and travel experiences lacked narrative tension. A few readers also remarked that certain sections felt overly nostalgic or self-indulgent, making it difficult to maintain interest throughout the entire book.

Despite these differing opinions, the discussion itself proved highly enjoyable. Members reflected on the challenges of writing modern travel literature and debated whether Bryson’s humorous and often ironic perspective strengthened or limited the book. The conversation also touched on questions of national identity, stereotypes and the changing image of Britain in contemporary literature.

As always, the meeting demonstrated how differently readers can respond to the same text and how these contrasting reactions often lead to the most stimulating conversations.

At the end of the evening, the group selected its next book: What We Can Know by Ian McEwan. Members looked forward to discussing McEwan’s exploration of knowledge, truth and human understanding at the following meeting.
