Book Club discussion July and the new summer read!

In the July session of our DEG Book Club, we met for an engaging and heartfelt discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This enduring classic, first published in 1960, transports us to the small, fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. Through the curious and often disarmingly honest perspective of young Scout Finch, we explored themes of justice, empathy, and moral integrity. Atticus Finch’s quiet but unshakeable defence of Tom Robinson – a Black man falsely accused of assault – led to thoughtful exchanges about courage, prejudice, and how these themes still resonate today.

Our lively discussion also touched on the much-debated Go Set a Watchman, often referred to as the “sequel” to To Kill a Mockingbird. Opinions varied on whether it stays true to the beloved characters – particularly Atticus – and whether Harper Lee intended it for publication at all. The discussion revealed a fascinating mix of curiosity, scepticism, and literary detective work.

Looking ahead, our summer read will be The Body by Stephen King. Known for his thrillers and supernatural tales, King here offers something a little different – a tender and nostalgic coming-of-age story set in the small-town Maine of the 1960s. It follows four boys, bound by friendship and curiosity, as they set out on a journey to find the body of a missing boy. Along the way, they encounter challenges and revelations that subtly mark the end of childhood innocence. The novella is at once suspenseful and deeply human, making it perfect for long summer days – or perhaps a late-night read.
