More information to follow!!! \n  \nBackground: \nThe Burns Supper is an annual celebration in Scotland in honor of the poet Robert Burns. It is held on his birthday\, January 25th (Burns Night). \nThe menu is always the same: soup\, haggis with rutabaga and potatoes (neeps and tatties)\, and a trifle for dessert. Whisky is drunk at least during the toasts. The formal part of the evening follows a very ritualized procedure. Before the haggis is served\, it is ceremoniously carried on a platter by the chef\, accompanied by a kilt-clad bagpiper\, to the speaker’s table\, where the host (or the landlord of the restaurant where Burns Night is being celebrated) recites the Burns poem The Address to a Haggis. At the words cut you up wi’ ready slight in the third stanza\, the casing is sliced open so that the innards spill out and spread all over the platter. \nAfter the meal\, a series of speeches are given\, always following a strictly ritualized order. The Immortal Memory is a memorial speech to Burns\, typically with literary tributes to selected poems and a reference to contemporary politics and morals. In Toast to the Lassies\, a selected man is allowed to tease the women before giving them a toast. One of the women can then reply in a similarly teasing tone. Gehalten wird es an seinem Geburtstag\, dem 25. Januar (Burns Night). \nAuf der Speisekarte steht immer das gleiche: Suppe\, Haggis mit Steckrübe und Kartoffeln (neeps and tatties)\, und als Nachtisch ein Trifle. Wenigstens bei den Trinksprüchen wird Whisky getrunken. Der formelle Teil des Abends folgt einem sehr ritualisierten Ablauf. Bevor der Haggis serviert wird\, wird er auf einer Servierplatte feierlich vom Koch unter Begleitung eines im Kilt bekleideten Dudelsackspielers zum Rednertisch getragen\, wo der Hausherr (oder der Wirt des Restaurants\, in dem man die Burns Night feiert) das Burns-Gedicht The Address to a Haggis vorträgt. Bei den Worten cut you up wi’ ready slight („dich mit schlichter Gewandtheit aufschlitzen“) in der dritten Strophe wird die Hülle aufgeschnitten\, sodass die Innereien auslaufen und sich auf der ganzen Servierplatte verteilen. \nNach dem Essen wird eine Reihe von Reden gehalten\, immer nach einer streng ritualisierten Ordnung. The Immortal Memory ist eine Gedenkrede an Burns\, typischerweise mit literarischer Würdigung ausgewählter Gedichte und einer Bezugnahme auf die heutige Politik und Sittlichkeiten. Beim Toast to the Lassies darf ein ausgewählter Mann die Frauen böse auf den Arm nehmen\, bevor er ihnen einen Trinkspruch widmet. Darauf darf eine der Frauen in ähnlich neckischem Ton antworten.
