On 14 July, members and guests of the Deutsch-Englische Gesellschaft Bayreuth e.V. came together for another lively Conversation Evening, this time exploring the fascinating world of influencers and social media. The discussion quickly revealed that participants brought very different experiences to the table. While some use social media only occasionally or not at all, others were well acquainted with the latest trends, online communities and the growing influence of digital content creators. This mix of perspectives led to a lively exchange of opinions and experiences.
The evening began with a discussion about the role social media plays in everyday life. Participants considered its many advantages, from staying in touch with friends and discovering new ideas to finding communities with shared interests. At the same time, concerns were raised about misinformation, online advertising, privacy, unrealistic beauty standards and the amount of time many people spend scrolling through carefully curated online lives.
A particularly engaging part of the evening centred on the growing popularity of so-called Trad Wife influencers. This topic provided a natural bridge to the DEG Book Club’s upcoming discussion of Yesteryear by Caro Burke. Participants reflected on why highly aesthetic portrayals of traditional domestic life appeal to many viewers and debated whether these accounts represent a genuine lifestyle choice or an idealised vision of the past. The conversation soon expanded to broader questions about nostalgia, gender roles, personal freedom and the often considerable gap between online presentation and everyday reality.

As always, the Conversation Evening offered an informal setting in which participants could practise their English while exchanging ideas on a contemporary topic. The diversity of opinions and personal experiences made for a stimulating and thought-provoking discussion.
The next opportunity to delve into the themes of the evening will come on 18 August, when the DEG Book Club meets to discuss Yesteryear by Caro Burke. The next Conversation Evening will take place on 15 September, when members and guests are once again invited to join an engaging discussion in English.
