Published in 2023, Going Zero by Anthony McCarten is a gripping, satirical novel set in a near-future world dominated by surveillance and technology. The story follows a diverse group of participants in a high-stakes game where they must remain completely “off the grid”—cut off from all digital and physical tracking—to win a massive cash prize. As the game intensifies, participants are forced to confront their deepest fears and desires, while the boundaries between reality and manipulation blur. McCarten explores themes of privacy, human nature, and the power of technology in a society increasingly governed by control and surveillance.

Anthony McCarten is a New Zealand-born author, playwright, and screenwriter, known for his compelling works across multiple genres. Born on April 26, 1961, in New Plymouth, New Zealand, McCarten began his career in the theater, gaining recognition with plays like Ladies Night (1999) and The Death of a Hero (2005). His early work focused on the complexities of human relationships and the ironies of modern life, but he gained wider fame as a novelist and screenwriter.
McCarten’s breakthrough novel was The Theory of Everything (2004), a biographical work about physicist Stephen Hawking, which was later adapted into an Academy Award-winning film in 2014. He followed this success with Darkest Hour (2017), a fictionalized account of Winston Churchill during World War II, also adapted into a critically acclaimed film. McCarten’s works often explore themes of ambition, genius, and personal struggle.
In addition to his novels and screenplays, McCarten has written works like Going Zero (2022), a thriller that delves into the psychological effects of surveillance and modern technology. McCarten’s writing is characterized by sharp wit, emotional depth, and a focus on historical figures and moments of profound personal and societal change. He continues to be a significant voice in contemporary literature and film.
